Trace fossils namely, Arenicolites, Monocraterion, Planolites,lchnogenus A, and trails are recorded from the Muth Quartzite of the Malla Johar area of the Kumaon Himalaya. The trace fossils are recorded dominantly from the middle unit i.e., Muth B Member. On the basis of ethology and preservational conditions it has been interpreted that during the deposition of the Muth B Member, the benthonic community was dominated by molluscs and polychaetes. The organisms producing trace fossils are dominated by feeding or feeding-dwelling habitat.Keywords

The Gondwana succession of Salbardi area (lat 21°25'15" N long 78°00'00' E) is ca 128 m thick, dominantly arenaceous lithounit. The succession is represented by diverse lithological variations and good preservation of sedimentary structures. Four lithofacies have been identified in the succession on the basis of detailed field and megascopic observations viz (i) thickly bedded, cross and parallel bedded sandstone lithofacies (ii) thinly bedded, multistoryed cross and parallel bedded sandstone-clay lithofacies (iii) concretionary sandstone lithofacies, and (iv) pebbliferous lithofacies. The lithofacies architecture of the succession is interpreted to reconstruct the depositional environment which ranges from point bar to channel floor of braided river system.The age of succession is suggested to be Early Cretaceous on the basis of field evidences and lithological correlations.

Granulometric analysis of nineteen sediment samples has been carried out for their statistical and textural parameters. The samples are collected from the northern and southern margins of Schirmacher Oasis extending below the polar ice sheet and grading to coastal area respectively and main rocky land of Schirmacher including lakes. The analysis shows that most of the sediments are of medium grain size and fall in poor to very poor sorted category.An attempt has been made to interpret the depositional set-up by plotting the scatter patterns between various textural parameters, including C-M plot and arithmetic log-probability curves. The influence of physical parameters viz. low to high velocity winds, ice and meltwater on sediment characteristics has been discussed.

A detailed grain-size analysis of twenty-two sandstone samples from the uppermost Gondwana succession of Salbardi area has been carried out to interpret the depositional pattern. The sandstones are mainly medium to coarse grained, moderately sorted, near-symmetrical to fine-skewed and mesokurtic in nature. Inter-relationship of various parameters shows bimodal nature of sediments having dominance of medium sand. Based on the granulometric analysis, a fluvial environment of deposition is interpreted for the succession.Keywords
